Two days after the election of 1876 between Rutherford B. Hayes (Republican governor of Ohio) and Samuel J. Tilden (Democratic governor of New York) the National Republican, a Washington D.C. newspaper that supported the Republican party, published reports from other newspapers that contradicted each other and as a whole demonstrated how closely contested the election was. A speech given by Hayes and published in the paper reiterated the uncertainty of the situation.
