General Information
The State Historical Building is located adjacent to the State Capitol in Des Moines’ historic east village. The building is home to the State Historical Society of Iowa, State Historical Museum of Iowa, State Library & Archives of Iowa and the Iowa History Research Center.
The events team at the State Historical Building is dedicated to assisting you with planning and creating a memorable event for you and your guests. Please contact us to arrange a private tour of the spaces or to ask additional questions.
Catering
On-site caterer, Baratta’s Catering, can accommodate any group, large or small. A dedicated catering manager will assist you in selecting the perfect meal, snack, dessert and/or beverage station to fit your needs.

Equipment
Audio/Visual
The auditorium is equipped with a sound booth and audio/visual equipment, however, you are encouraged to bring your own technician as limited technical support is available from State Historical Building staff.
The building has a sound system available to rent for an additional charge for events held during regular business hours Monday – Friday. Events held after building hours and on the weekends can work with Markey’s Rental and Staging to rent sound equipment.
Tables and Chairs
The building provides five-foot round tables and stackable poly-folding chairs. Tables and chairs are included in the rental price, accommodating a maximum of 280 guests. If more tables and chairs are needed, additional items will be rented for an additional cost.
Parking
Complimentary parking is available in the Capitol Complex Parking Garage located at the corner of E. Grand Ave. and Pennsylvania Ave. Metered parking is also available on the street surrounding the building. Parking is not guaranteed and based on availability. Valet parking can be arranged through Keck Parking.
